Recently, a video that has gone viral on the internet showed how an influencer from Madhya Pradesh was subjected to scrutiny by a woman who interrupted her video to comment on her outfit. The influencer, Anjali Jha, uploaded the video anyway, sparking a conversation about choice and cultural norms. In the video, Jha could be seen recording a reel when a woman approaches her ‘reminding’ her of the country she belongs to. The woman can be heard saying, “Ye koi America London thodihai. Apne Hindustan kanaam mat badnamkaro. Wahake logon ko koi kuchnahikehta, par Hindustan ke ladies kimaryada ye hi hai” (This is not America or London. Don’t tarnish the name of India. People there don’t comment, but this is the standard of dignity for women in India).

The woman didn’t stop her rant on the influencer’s outfit and further stressed that the area might not be safe for such clothing. “Koi nazreuthakedekhega, kitnagussaaatahai beta. Mahaulachanahihai, gandahai” (Someone will look at you, it makes me so angry, child. The environment is not good, it’s unpleasant), she added. The woman further said, “Aaraam se video banao. Tum meribetijaisi ho. Jao dress badalkeaao” (Film the video peacefully. You are like my daughter. Go and change your dress and come back). Sharing the video, Jha wrote, “Aunty yrrr.”
