Indian developers question the fairness of salaries in global remote jobs.

A heated debate has erupted online after a tech professional claimed that Indian developers working remotely for US companies are being underpaid compared to their counterparts abroad. The conversation, sparked by full-stack developer Sakshi on X, has drawn sharp opinions on whether remote work is empowering or exploitative.

Sakshi argued that remote employment is “the biggest scam sold to Indian developers,” noting that while Indian engineers earn between ₹25–40 lakh annually, US-based peers often earn three to four times as much. She further highlighted that remote workers lose out on workplace visibility, promotions, and equity opportunities. “No office means no visibility, no politics, no real promotions. Meanwhile, your onsite batchmate is already earning more,” she wrote, painting a bleak picture of career stagnation for those working from home.

Her post quickly triggered responses from professionals across the tech industry. Some agreed, recalling experiences where Indian IT firms charged clients hefty hourly rates but paid local employees a fraction of that amount. Others, however, pushed back, insisting that remote work has improved their quality of life. One user noted that working from home allowed them to avoid long commutes, live outside polluted metros, and still receive compensation comparable to that of onsite colleagues. For them, flexibility and work-life balance outweighed concerns about visibility.

The debate underscores a broader question about the future of global tech work: should companies align pay scales across geographies, or continue to justify location-based pay disparities? While remote work undeniably offers freedom and flexibility, concerns about career growth and fair compensation remain unresolved. For many, the real challenge lies in ensuring that remote opportunities are not just cost-saving measures for corporations but pathways to equitable and fulfilling careers.
