Marvel confirms Black Panther 3 with Ryan Coogler returning as Director.

Marvel Studios has officially announced that Black Panther 3 will hit theatres on December 18, 2028, introducing David Jonsson as the new Black Panther. The reveal came during the studio’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where Marvel president Kevin Feige and director Ryan Coogler shared the news with fans.

Jonsson, recognized for his role in Alien: Romulus, will portray Prince T’Challa II (Toussaint), the son of the late King T’Challa. This marks a significant shift in the franchise, as the character was last seen as a child in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. His adult portrayal suggests a time jump in the storyline, though Marvel has kept plot details under wraps.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Toussaint is the child of T’Challa and Nakia (played by Lupita Nyong’o). Raised in Haiti to shield him from the burdens of Wakanda’s throne, his existence was known only to Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) until he revealed his identity to Shuri. With Jonsson now stepping into the role, audiences will see Toussaint embrace his destiny as Wakanda’s protector.

Director Ryan Coogler’s return ensures continuity in vision. He previously revealed that the original plan for Black Panther 2 centered on T’Challa and his son through a Wakandan tradition called the “Ritual of 8.” This rite of passage would have seen father and son spend eight days together in the wild, a storyline tragically altered after Chadwick Boseman’s passing in 2020. Coogler reflected on Boseman’s impact, calling him a profound influence both personally and professionally.

While Marvel has not disclosed further casting details, Coogler hinted in past interviews that Denzel Washington might join the ensemble. For now, the studio has confirmed three key elements: the release date, Coogler’s return, and Jonsson’s casting as Toussaint.

This announcement signals a new era for the franchise. With Jonsson stepping into the mantle, Black Panther 3 promises to honour Boseman’s legacy while charting a bold future for Wakanda. Fans worldwide now await the next chapter in one of Marvel’s most celebrated sagas.
