CAS delays decision on appeal by Vinesh Phogat for a silver medal

Vinesh Phogat will have to wait a little longer as CAS will announce its verdict by August 13.

The world saw the tragic turn of fate that happened a few days ago, where Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was supposed to play the final in the women’s 50kg final wrestling event, was ousted a few hours before the event as she was found to be “100 grams overweight.” The wrestler appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to be given to her a joint silver medal. However, she must wait a little longer as CAS will announce its verdict on August 13.

The ad-hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has delayed its verdict on Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s joint silver medal appeal in women’s 50kg wrestling at the Paris Olympics 2024. She will now have to wait till August 13 for CAS’s decision.

IOA’s statement on the matter.

An Indian Olympic Association (IOA) statement read, “The ad-hoc division of CAS has extended time for the Sole Arbitrator Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett in the Vinesh Phogat vs. United World Wrestling & the International Olympic Committee matter to give a decision till 6-00 p.m. on August 13, 2024.”

On Saturday afternoon, CAS announced that a verdict would be given by 9.30 pm IST on August 10, but it was delayed. The ruling was postponed until August 11, but it has been revealed that CAS has asked for extra documents to aid in the decision-making process. On Friday, CAS confirmed that a verdict would be given by the end of this Olympics. Now, it is revealed it will happen on August 13. Vinesh’s appeal is that she be given a joint silver medal with Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, as she was within the prescribed weight limit during her bouts on Tuesday.
