Amit Shah attributed the decision to PM Modi’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh.
Amit Shah, the Home Minister, said that on Monday, the Ministry of Home Affairs decided to create five new districts for the union territory of Ladakh. Taking to social media platform X, he wrote about the creation of the new districts in the union territory and attributed it to PM Modi’s vision for a developed and prosperous Ladakh.

Taking to X, Amit Shah wrote, “In pursuit of Narendra Modi’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang, will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny. The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh.”
Ladakh currently has only two districts.
Ladakh currently only has two districts, which are Leh and Kargil. Both have their autonomous district councils which govern them. After the creation of five more districts, the union territory will have a total of seven districts.
Till 2019, Ladakh was a part of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir; however, that year, the BJP-led central government revoked the special status accorded to the state, dividing the state into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
