Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s ODI retirement could be announced in the coming months.
Fans might feel disappointed as the latest reports suggest that the BCCI has finalised its World Cup stance on ViratKohli and Rohit Sharma. The star cricketers’ ODI retirement could be announced in the coming months if they refuse to fulfil ‘one condition’ set over possible 2027 World Cup selection.
BCCI may finalise ODI World Cup decision on Kohli and Rohit.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma remain active in the One Day International format, after having quit both T20Is and Tests. When it comes to the ODI format, the 2027 World Cup is the target for the duo, though neither of them has officially communicated their plan for the future. As per a report in Dainik Jagran, neither Kohli nor Rohit is guaranteed a spot in India’s 2027 ODI World Cup squad. Since none of them are playing in T20Is and Tests, match time in the coming years is also going to be limited. The situation, hence, raises significant doubts in the minds of the selection committee and the top bosses of BCCI.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma may have to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Reports also claim that both Kohli and Rohit would have to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the domestic One Day International that starts in December this year. Without the Vijay Hazare Trophy participation, the doors are unlikely to open for them. The report quoted a source from the team management as saying, “Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma do not fit in our plans for the ODI World Cup 2027.” The report even claimed that the duo wanted to be a part of the England tour but were informed by the selectors that they are unlikely to be picked. Hence, they announced their retirement from the format.
India’s next ODI assignment is set against Australia in October. However, the report claims that the series might see the iconic duo bringing curtains to their international careers as their return to domestic cricket at this stage seems highly unlikely.
