Atishi succeeds Arvind Kejriwal; she is a close confidant of Kejriwal and has been the fiercest critic of BJP since the beginning.
On Tuesday, Chief of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Arvind Kejriwal proposed the name of Atishi as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. This development came two days after Arvind Kejriwal announced that he would resign as the CM of Delhi within 48 hours after the Supreme Court granted him bail in the Delhi liquor scam. He said that he would seek re-election and would not sit on the chair before getting a “certificate of honesty” from the people of Delhi.
Atishi becomes the key face of the AAP party.
Arvind Kejriwal has proposed the name of Atishi as the succeeding Chief Minister of Delhi. She is the essential face of the party and the government and holds multiple portfolios, including finance, education, and PWD. Over the years, she also emerged as the fiercest critic of the Bharatiya Janata Party when Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia were in jail. During the Delhi water crisis, she defended the AAP government. Several other AAP leaders, including Saurabh Bhardwaj, Gopal Rai, and Kailash Gehlot, were rumored to be the frontrunners in the chief ministerial race.
Arvind Kejriwal was directed by the court not to enter the CM’s office after the Supreme Court granted bail to him in the Delhi excise policy case. The BJP alleged that Kejriwal resigned because of SC’s conditions. Atishi represents the Kalkaji constituency in the Delhi Assembly (MLA). She became known initially as an advisor to the Delhi government’s education department before becoming an MLA after winning the 2020 elections. She became a Cabinet minister in March 2023 in the Delhi government, after Manish Sisodia and Satyendra Jain were incarcerated in corruption cases.
