During the Monsoon session of Parliament, BJP MP Anurag Thakur allegedly sought to know Rahul Gandhi’s caste. However, when Congress leaders criticized him on the same, Anurag Thakur said he did not name any person. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition, on Tuesday, July 30, accused Thakur of “insulting and abusing” him in the Lok Sabha during the discussion of the Union Budget.
What did Anurag Thakur comment?
Anurag Thakur said, “Those whose caste is not known talk about the caste census. I want to remind the Speaker that in this House itself, a former prime minister RG-1 (Rajiv Gandhi) had opposed reservation for OBCs.” During the discussion in the Lok Sabha on the Union Budget, Anurag Thakur remarked that those whose caste is unknown talk about the caste census. After receiving a backlash on his remark, he clarified that he didn’t name any person.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reacts.
On Tuesday, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reacted to Anurag Thakur’s remark on caste. Posting on X, she wrote, “A socio-economic caste census is the demand of 80 per cent of the people of this country. Today, it was said in Parliament that those whose caste is not known talk about a caste census. Will 80 per cent of India’s population be abused in Parliament now.” She added, “(Prime Minister) Narendra Modi should clarify whether this happened at his behest.” Pawan Khera, Congress’s media and publicity department head said that the caste of Rahul Gandhi’s family is “martyrdom.”
Rahul Gandhi claimed that he was insulted and abused by Anurag Thakur, saying, “Whoever raises the issues of Adivasi, Dalit and the backward, is abused. I will happily accept these abuses…Anurag Thakur has abused me and insulted me. But I do not want any apology from him.”
