A woman was assaulted on a train in West Bengal by train passengers who thought she was a child lifter. She was thrashed by passengers on board a local train at North 24 Parganas Birati station, West Bengal.

A woman was beaten up by a few train passengers on board a local train in West Bengal on the suspicion of being a child lifter. On Wednesday, the Government Railway Police (GRP) said an investigation is underway. Also, police personnel were sent to the woman’s home to cross-check if her claims of innocence were right.
The woman was rescued later.
The Railway Police personnel rescued the woman later from the mob, who local train passengers thrashed, alleging that she lifted a baby. However, the woman claimed that it was her baby and she was the mother. She also mentioned that she hails from a neighboring state and lives in the Dumdum area of North 24 Parganas district.
The baby seemed comfortable in her company.
The Police said that the baby seemed comfortable in the woman’s company. However, a probe was still initiated on the matter. The official said the GRP personnel began investigating and accompanied the woman to her residence in Dumdum.
Passengers turned suspicious.
Passengers on a train in West Bengal turned suspicious after a woman could not reply coherently to their queries when they asked her about her relation to the baby. The news of the child lifter had already spread, and thus, the passengers assaulted her and blocked the railway tracks for 15 minutes.

The GRP had to resort to a lathi charge to rescue the woman. The incident happened close to on the heels of at least three such cases of mob thrashing strangers in different locations of North 24 Parganas district on suspicion of being child lifters.
The Police have requested people not to be swayed by such rumors and arrested a few on a charge of spreading fake news on social media of child lifting.
