The decision by CAS is said to be extended till August 16, 6 pm.
Ever since Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) for a joint silver medal, CAS has only given new dates for the decision to be given. In a statement on Tuesday, the previously scheduled date for announcing the decision, CAS cited Article 18 of its arbitration rules. Regarding her appeal to be awarded a joint silver medal in the women’s wrestling 50kg event of the Paris Olympics 2024, the CAS delayed the decision and extended it until August 16, 6 pm.
CAS extends the hearing decision until August 16.
As stated by the sports court on Tuesday, which was deemed the previously scheduled date for the decision to be announced, it has now extended its hearing decision until August 16, 6 pm Paris time. Citing Article 18 of the CAS arbitration rules, it stated, “The Panel shall give a decision within 24 hours of lodging the application. In exceptional cases, the President of the ad hoc Division may extend this time limit if circumstances so require.”
Vinesh Phogat case.
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was supposed to play in the final of the women’s 50kg wrestling event at the Paris Olympics 2024. But, only a few hours before the finals, she was ousted, saying she was 100 grams overweight, resulting in her getting disqualified. Vinesh, backed by the Indian Olympic Association, appealed against the decision to the CAS, the highest sporting court.
Vinesh Phogat had asked CAS to award her a shared silver medal. In its arguments, the Indian side cited the distance between the wrestling venue and the Athletes Village in Paris and the tight schedule between bouts as reasons for her inability to maintain the prescribed weight for the category, which resulted in her disqualification from the gold medal bout.
