ShashiTharoor publicly lauded GautamGambhir’s role ahead of the New Zealand series; however, his response has sparked debate on the internet.

On Thursday, India head coach GautamGambhir created a stir online with his latest tweet. After India’s first T20I win against New Zealand in Nagpur, Gambhir responded to a tweet by ShashiTharoor praising him, but his response hinted that he does not have complete authority over the Indian team, sparking widespread discussion online.

Congress MP ShashiTharoor praised GautamGambhir.

ShashiTharoor, a Congress MP, had recently praised India’s head coach, GautamGambhir, after India’s first T20I win against New Zealand in Nagpur. He had earlier shared that he met his old friend GautamGambhir in Nagpur and held a frank conversation with the India head coach about the team. He spoke warmly of Gambhir and described his role as the second-toughest job in India, behind only that of the Prime Minister, praise that inadvertently led to Gambhir’s controversial reply. Tharoor wrote a day ahead of the opening T20I of the series, “In Nagpur, enjoyed a good & frank discussion with my old friend GautamGambhir, the man with the hardest job in India after the PM’s! He is being second-guessed by millions daily, but stays calm and walks on undaunted. A word of appreciation for his quiet determination and able leadership. Wishing him all success.” Gambhir reacted to this tweet recently and hit back at critics who called him out over the Indian team’s transition phase.

Gambhir’s tweet sparked a stir on the internet.

He wrote on X, “When the dust settles, truth and logic about a coach’s supposedly ‘unlimited authority’ will become clear. Till then, I’m amused at being pitted against my own who are the very best!” However, this response didn’t sit down well with fans and netizens. One fan wrote, “A Head Coach shouldn’t be saying stuff like this, even if it’s true or not, about his own team on social media because then it is open to speculate even further, but that’s just my pov.” Another reacted, “Stop behaving as if you have done something extraordinary by turning an underdog team into champions. You were simply lucky to coach the best cricketing nation. Kohli won you the Champions Trophy; otherwise, what you did to the Test team is what you will do to our ODI team in the future after Kohli’s retirement. And our T20 team is not doing well because of you. It is doing well because Rohit, as T20I captain, built a strong team for the future. And for God’s sake, learn some decency as a professional coach and stop explaining yourself like a clown after every random match victory.” A third fan expressed, “never seen ViratKohli tweeting when he was criticised left, right &center that: when the dust settles, truth & logic about a captain’s supposedly “unlimited autority” will become clear. We gonna hear so many stories about his coaching tenure once he leaves this job, interesting time ahead!”
