Farhan Akhtar on Ranbir Kapoor’s “Animal:” “Didn’t resonate with it”

The actor-director said that Ranbir’s character in Animal was “problematic.”

Several stars, celebrities, and other prominent figures across industries have spoken about the film and shared their opinions through all these months after Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Animal was released last year in December. A section of the audience found the film highly violent and misogynistic, whereas others found the film entertaining and hailed the performance of Ranbir Kapoor and others, stating that a film should only be viewed as a film, a source of entertainment, and nothing more. Now, Farhan Akhtar, during a recent interview, has given his opinion on “Animal.”

Actor and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, in an interview with Faye D’Souza, spoke about the controversial film Animal, directed by Sandeep Vanga Reddy. He said, “The film didn’t do much for me. Is it something that I would recommend somebody to watch? I guess not.” When asked if he would’ve produced the film, Farhan said, “No, I won’t. It doesn’t resonate with me. For me, I feel that the character is problematic.”

Farhan previously expressed his opinion on the film Animal. In an interview with YouTuber Raj Shamani, Farhan shared, “I don’t believe that some things should not be shown. We are in a field where if someone tells me, ‘You can’t make a film like this,’ then I’ll be like, ‘Who are you to tell me what I should and should not make?’ I am permitted by the laws of this country, and I have the freedom of artistic expression to say whatever I want.”

At the time of its release, Animal received much criticism from industry people, including Farhan’s father, writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar. However, Animal became one of the biggest blockbusters, grossing over Rs. 900 crore worldwide.
