A parked metro caught fire which was all over social media on Monday! The train was on its way to Vaishali when the fire started around 6:21 pm at Rajiv Chowk Metro Station

In the video posted, you can see flames coming from the pantograph of the train. People on the train were freaking out and recording the whole thing on their phones. They were trying to figure out what caused the fire. It was intense!

Netizens In Frenzy

Having over 65,000 views on X(formerly known as Twitter), the video garnered several reactions from the users .“That looks scary but it poses little or no hazard,” wrote a user. “hauz khas metro station is also on high alert no safety precautions as it’s convert into a food court instead of metro station,” another user commented

Another netizen questioned about the back-to-back fire outbreaks being reported of late.

“…(fire) poses no safety threat or hazard.” – DMRC

”The extant incident was the case of pantograph flashing which occurs at times due to some external/foreign material getting stuck between OHE and pantograph and poses no safety threat or hazard to passengers. However, the exact cause will be further investigated in this case,” DMRC added.

Minor Fire Breakout At the Station

The affected pantograph was immediately put out of service and the train continued its onward journey as usual after around 5 minutes of troubleshooting with the remaining pantographs of the train, DMRC further said.

The exact cause of the fire will be investigated in this case, the DMRC said.

The DMRC also said that this does not pose any threat to passengers, in the statement.

Notably, the pantograph is an apparatus mounted on the roof of the train and collects the electricity needed to power it.

Delhi Metro- Lifeline For Delhiites

Delhi Metro has been a lifeline for Delhiites, ever since it became operational back in 2002. Presently, the Delhi Metro network consists of about 392.44 km with 288 stations across Delhi and NCR. The DMRC opened its first corridor between Shahdara and Tis Hazari on 25th December 2002. Every year, the Delhi Metro carries 700 million passengers, greater than the population of the United States.

Delhi Metro Phase 4 project’s routes with 6 lines totaling 103.93 km within Delhi’s borders were finalized in July 2015. Out of this, 61.679 kms across 3 lines (priority corridors) with 45 stations were approved by India’s Central Government for construction on March 7, 2019. The Silver Line’s length was increased in October 2020, making the entire project 65.1 km long.
