IGI Airport Theft: A Man Took 200 Flights in 110 Days

Over the course of 110 days a thief boarded 200 flights last year and stole jewellery worth of lakhs. He travelled thousands of kilometers in the country through flights to only steal jewellery worth lakhs from the passengers.

A man named Rajesh Kapoor stole valuables worth lakhs from IGI Airport

The Delhi police busted the new style of theft when a women reported of having jewellery worth 7 Lakh, being stolen from her handbag when she was travelling from Hyderabad to Delhi last month. Another passenger from US reported of theft of valuables worth 20 lakhs from his cabin bag.

After scanning hundreds of footages from airports the police arrested a man named Rajesh Kapoor.

The Modus Operandi

Rajesh Kapoor was arrested after the police scanned footages of airports of Delhi, Hyderabad and Amritsar. The police nabbed Rajesh from his home in Delhi’s Paharganj area. The accused told the police how he managed to rob people off from the country’s most secured areas – the airports and managed to escape.

The man dodged the airport security to loot several lakhs of valuables

Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police said that the man targeted passengers who took connecting flights. For example, the woman travelling from Hyderabad to Delhi had to take a connecting flight to the US from IGI Airport, Delhi.

Similarly, the foreigner was travelling to Frankfurt, Germany from Amritsar and had a connecting flight from Delhi.

As per the senior cop, the thief used to target women and elderly and used to observe their behaviour at the airport. He used to slyly follow them and read the info on their baggage declaration slips to get more info about the valuables inside the bag. The police also added that they saw the man interact only at the boarding gate before that he used to quietly observe his target.

The man used to pretend to adjust the bags in overhead section of the airplane

The cops said he used to sit near the passenger and would pretend to adjust the bags in the overhead section and steal jewellery and other valuables.

A large quantity of gold and silver was retrieved from his house although he claims that he sold some of the jewellery to Sharad Jain in Karol Bagh.

Earlier Stole From Trains, Later Targeted Airports

The thief who used to board trains to carry out theft and “gained success”, the police said, after getting caught, the man “went silent” and later decided to rob airport passengers.
