Archana Makwana, a yoga practitioner, has been receiving flak for performing asanas at the Golden Temple. For the same, the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has filed a police complaint against the woman for performing yoga inside the premises of the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

SGPC is irked by Makwana for performing yoga on the temple’s premises.

Performing yoga on the premises of Amritsar’s Golden Temple has angered the Gurudwara panel, which has now dismissed three of its employees from their jobs for negligence in duty and fined Rs. 5000 each.

Archana Makwana wished to celebrate International Yoga Day in the Golden Temple.

The yoga practitioner wanted to celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21 at the Golden Temple. She came to Delhi the same day to receive an award and perform asanas on the premises of the Golden Temple. She then posted the photos on Instagram, which irked the Gurudwara panel. Thus, a police complaint was lodged against Makwana for hurting the Sikh sentiments and dignity.

Harjinder Singh Dhami, SGPC president, said that the woman performed yoga and left the Golden Temple without offering her prayers. He said that some people deliberately ignore the sanctity and historical importance of the holy place and commit heinous acts. He suggested people not to do such acts that require them to apologize later.

Archana Makwana, in a show of remorse, has removed her photos and videos from Instagram. She has publicly apologized, expressing her unawareness that her yoga practice in the Gurudwara Sahib premises could be offensive to some. She clarified that she was only paying her respect and didn’t mean any harm. Despite her public apology, she claimed to have received death threats over phone calls, further highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
