Jay Shah to take over as ICC Chairman.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah is all set to take over as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), as per ‘The Age’ on Wednesday. Speculation about Jay Shah becoming the new ICC Chairman picked up pace after the current ICC Chairman, Greg Barclay, opted out of a third term on Tuesday after his tenure, which will end on November 30.
What did the report say about Barclay’s resignation?
The report said Barclay resigned “amid a $US3 billion ($4.46 billion) dispute between the governing body and its major broadcast rights holder Star.” The report also said, “Two sources with knowledge of discussions, speaking anonymously because negotiations are confidential, confirmed the move late on Tuesday night.” Jay Shah has received backing from Cricket Australia, England, and Wales Cricket Board, and other full-time members. The last date to file official nominations for the ICC Chairman post is August 27. An ICC Chairman is eligible for three terms of two years each, and the New Zealand-based attorney, Barclay, has completed four years so far.
ICC said, “ICC Chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the Board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020 before being re-elected in 2022.”
