The waterlogging happened in several low-lying areas in the city, including Kadachanenthal, Tamukkam, Thallakulam, Athikulam, Goripalayam, Simmakkal, LBT Nagar, Azhagar Koil Salai, BB Kulam, Yanaikkal bridge, Mullai Nagar, Nelpettai, and Keelavasal. As per PTI, knee-deep rainwater entered residential areas, causing mayhem among residents.
Tamil Nadu CM said the state government was monitoring the rescue and relief activities.
On Saturday, MK Stalin, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, said that the state government was closely monitoring the rescue and relief activities on a war footing to bring normalcy to Madurai and its neighborhood. On X, in a post, MK Stalin wrote, “A team of engineers, workers, and giant electric motors have been mobilized from the nearby municipalities to drain out the rainwater from the residential areas.” He added that medical camps have been established in twenty areas, and people from the most affected places have been safely accommodated there.
Madurai Corporation Commissioner C Dinesh Kumar, on the apprehension that Kanmois (traditional waterbodies) were getting breached, said, “All the Kanmois are safe and are brimming with water flowing into the Vaigai river. Efforts are now on to bail out the water.” He further said that Madurai experienced continuous rain for the last 25 days, recording 260 mm rainfall, which was 60 mm above the average.
