The last rites of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister AjitPawar were carried out on Thursday. The leader was killed in a plane crash in Pune district’s Baramati on Wednesday. He was brought to VidyaPratishthan college ground for his funeral, and cremated with full state honours. Union ministers Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, former Union minister SharadPawar, and BJP president Nitin Nabin attended the 66-year-old Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief’s funeral at Baramati. The leader and four others were killed after the airplane crashed barely 200 metres from the edge of the tabletop airstrip.

Thousands of people gathered for AjitPawar’s last rites and chanted, “Ajit Dada amarrahe”, when his mortal remains, draped in the national flag, were brought from his village, Katewadi, to the VidyaPratishthan ground. Present at the last rites were also Maharashtra CM DevendraFadnavisand Deputy CM EknathShinde, along with AjitPawar’s wife, Sunetra, a Rajya Sabha member, and sons Parth and Jay. AjitPawar’s cousin SupriyaSule, Lok Sabha member from Baramati, and NCP working president and former Union minister Praful Patel were also present.
AjitPawar’s sons Parth and Jay were seen lighting their father’s funeral pyre. On Thursday morning, the mortal remains of AjitPawar were taken from the PunyashlokAhilyadevi Hospital in Baramati, where they were kept overnight, to his village. The others killed in the tragedy were Captain Sumit Kapoor, who had a flying experience of 15,000 hours, and co-pilot Capt. Shambhavi Pathak, with 1,500 hours of flying, Personal Security Officer (PSO) VidipJadhav and flight attendant Pinky Mali.
