Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat reaches the final after defeating Yusneylis Guzman in the semi-finals. This confirms a medal for India as the athlete has reached the final. Vinesh earlier stunned everyone with her win, defeating four-time world champion Yui Susaki in the round of 16. She also won against European champion Oksana Livach in the quarterfinals to reach the semis at the Olympics.

Vinesh Phogat won the semi-finals against Yusneylis Guzman and reached the finals of the Olympic wrestling game. She marched into the finals of the women’s 50kg freestyle event after her win over Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman, winning the bout 5-0.

The Indian wrestler was leading 1-0 at the end of the first period when her opponent conceded a point due to inaction. In her second period, she unleashed her attack, taking a big lead of 5-0, and kept getting the better of the Pan American Games champion Guzman in the 6-minute bout. Vinesh, earlier, became the first woman from India to reach the semis at the Games. In the 2016 Games, Sakshi Malik won a bronze via a repechage after losing in the quarterfinals.

Who will Vinesh Phogat face in the finals?

Vinesh will now face Sarah Hildebrandt from the US in the final match for the gold medal. Hildebrandt won the first semi-final, defeating Mongolia’s Dolgorjavyn Otgonjargal.

Vinesh Phogat made headlines last year when she protested against WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. She even switched weight categories from 53kg to 50kg and suffered a knee injury, which ruled her out of the Asian Games 2023. Now, she has reached the finals of the Paris Olympics 2024 and could become the first Indian wrestler to win a gold at the Olympics.
