Rohit Sharma clarified in a press conference that doors are still open for Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara’s comeback.
During a post-match conference, India captain Rohit Sharma recently suffered a slip of the tongue when speaking on Rahane and Pujara’s retirement, moments after Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket. The huge announcement came after the third Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series ended in a draw, leaving the series still tied at 1-1.
Rohit Sharma was asked about senior players Rahane and Pujara in the national team.
In the post-match conference, Rohit was asked about the absence of senior players like Rahane and Pujara in the national team. Rohit responded by saying that he is still in touch with Rahane but seldom gets to meet Pujara. He hoped to stay in touch with R Ashwin, joking that the veteran bowler will most likely join the broadcasting unit as an expert in a few years. He said, “We will always remain friends. Yes, we won’t be seeing each other on the tour, but we will definitely be meeting each other. Ajinkya is from Bombay, and we meet often. Pujara is hiding somewhere in Rajkot, so we don’t meet so often. But Ashwin might join you in a few years, so we will keep meeting him.”
Rohit’s slip of tongue on Rahane and Pujara retirement.
He by mistakenly spoke about the retirement of Rahane and Pujara and immediately corrected himself, saying that Rahane and Pujara are yet to retire. He said, “Let me clarify, Rahane has not retired. You’ll get me killed. Pujara, too, hasn’t retired. I just put them in the same sentence because of your question. At this moment, all three aren’t there in the Indian team, but Ashwin has officially retired. But you never know, Rahane and Pujara might return later and the door is open for them.”
