Hum Hindustani, directed by Rahul Dholakia, is a period drama based on India’s 1st elections.

Netflix recently shared the slate of films and series it will release in 2026, and the list has sparked much curiosity among audiences, who can’t wait for each of these projects across genres to drop on the platform soon. The list also includes a period drama titled Hum Hindustani.

Directed by Rahul Dholakia, Hum Hindustani, produced by MonishaAdvani, MadhuBhojwani, and NikkhilAdvani’sEmmay Entertainment, is a period drama inspired by actual events surrounding the 1st-ever democratic elections in India. The film portrays the fight for universal suffrage and is set to debut on Netflix. No official release date has been announced yet. Saif Ali Khan is headlining the period drama set in the year 1950. It tells the behind-the-scenes story of India’s first democratic election and also stars Pratik Gandhi and Deepak Dobriyal.

Telling the story of India’s inaugural democratic election in 1950, the first-look teaser of Hum Hindustani has sparked curiosity and excitement among audiences and fans. Netflix shared the teaser on its official Instagram and YouTube channels, giving audiences a glimpse of the period setting and the struggles Saif’s character faces in conducting India’s historic election. It is set in 1950, and follows Saif’s character as he advocates for universal adult suffrage while facing resistance from Indian monarchs. Pratik Gandhi plays a determined police officer tasked with ensuring that the election proceeds smoothly.

Saif Ali Khan’s character is based on Sukumar Sen, the 1st Chief Election Commissioner of India, while Pratik Gandhi’s character is based on V.G. Kanetkar (Vishnu Gopal Kanetkar), a distinguished Indian police officer who served in the Imperial Police Service and later the Indian Police Service (IPS). He was also known for taking down the notorious dacoit BhupatMeruji (played by Deepak Dobriyal in the film). According to the official synopsis, “In newly independent India, a team of officials battles chaos, resistance, and impossible odds to deliver the nation’s very first democratic election- inspired by true events.”
