In a devastating incident in Pune, two young techies lost their lives when a speeding Porsche collided with their motorbike. Read more about this tragic accident and the ongoing investigation.

Two tech guys tragically lost their lives in a car crash in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar neighborhood early on a Sunday morning. A fancy Porsche, supposedly being driven by a young person who had been drinking, slammed into their motorcycle. The young driver was let out on bail not long after the crash, but only if he agreed to help out the Yerwada traffic police for a couple of weeks and write an essay about road accidents.

The accused could not escape and was beaten by the people nearby

The Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, was really surprised and upset that the Juvenile Justice Board didn’t take the crash more seriously. Fadnavis told the media that the police are trying to get permission from a higher court to treat the young driver as an adult, even though he was given bail.

“The order passed by the JJ Board was shocking and surprising as it had taken a very lenient view of such a heinous crime. The Pune police had petitioned the board to allow them to treat the teenager as an adult as his age is 17 years and eight months. But the board kept the application aside by categorising it as ‘seen and filed’ and released him on bail which led to public outrage,” said Fadnavis.

Victims of the car crash

Anis and Ashwini, who are both 24 years old, were coming back from a last-minute dinner with their friends when a fast Porsche crashed into them. Ashwini, who was from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, was riding on the back of Anis’s bike. Ashwini’s mom, Mamta, shared that her daughter had a surprise planned for her dad’s birthday in June – she had already booked a ticket to go back to Jabalpur.

Victims were returning from a friend’s house when the incident happened

“Just a day before the accident, Ashwini informed me that she will be returning home in Jabalpur and had booked her ticket for June 18 to surprise her father on her birthday. However, it ended this way,” she said.

Anis Awadhiya, who is from Pali town in Madhya Pradesh, moved to Pune for work after finishing college at DY Patil College of Engineering. His uncle, Dnyanendra Soni, shared that Anis’s family is heartbroken by his passing. They are left with his mom, dad, and younger brother who is 21 and also goes to DY Patil College in the city.

Juvenile Being Given ‘Preferential Treatment’

In another report, the Congress party in Maharashtra claimed that the  juvenile accused of knocking down two motorbike riders is being given preferential treatment in the police custody. The congress spokesperson said that the accused was being served “burgers and pizzas” while in custody. He demanded strict action against the police officers.

Police Statement

On the other hand,  Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar told reporters that the police have acted according to the law from the beginning and denied any external pressure.

Kumar added that stringent action will be taken against the police personnel if they are found to be aiding the teenager directly or indirectly.

The head cop said that the police used a law called Indian Penal Code Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and tried to make the boy be treated like a grown-up in court, but the court denied.

It all went down on a Sunday morning when the boy, who was supposedly driving a fancy car while drunk, crashed into a motorcycle, and sadly, two 24-year-old IT workers named Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa lost their lives. The juvenile got out on bail from the Juvenile Justice Board.

The deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, wasn’t too happy about the Juvenile Justice Board letting the boy out on bail. The board made the juvenile do stuff like write an essay as part of the conditions for getting out.
