Markets, farming, and schools in UP’s Bahraich come to a halt.
Wolf attacks have caused mayhem in UP’s Bahraich district’s Mahsi subdivision. These brutal attacks by wolves have killed nine people and injured 24, as per reports. The city comes to a halt, with schools, farming, and markets getting shut down due to the panic created by these attacks.

Schools and markets are deserted as villagers form patrol groups for safety. Children have stopped going to schools, and farmers have stopped going to fields. Villagers have been buying basic groceries from a few hole-in-the-wall shops run from a few houses. Wolves so far have killed nine people, including eight children, while another 24 are injured in the region.

Villagers have organized themselves into groups, taking turns patrolling the areas and ensuring the safety of their kids and livestock. Late on Wednesday, a wolf attacked a few goats tethered in the courtyard of a house in Pachdevari village in Hardi. Any fresh wolf attack is quickly relayed to the patrol teams, who alert forest officials and intensify their own efforts to secure the area.

To address this crisis, a four-member team formed from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, arrived in Bahraich on Tuesday night to study the pattern of wolf attacks. They are developing strategies for capturing the wolves and also offering guidance on mitigating man-animal conflicts.
Monika Rani, the Bahraich district magistrate, said a dedicated team had been deployed to patrol the villages at night. She said, “This team comprises panchayat assistants, secretaries, revenue officials, sanitation workers, and Anganwadi and ANM workers, all engaged in activities to raise awareness among residents.” She added, “The block administration has initiated the installation of solar lights. So far, approximately 120 solar lights and doors have been installed with the assistance of different departments.” They have also made many other arrangements.
