Cricket Australia pushes for reciprocal ties as Big Bash League heads to Chennai.
Cricket Australia (CA) is exploring the possibility of hosting an Indian Premier League (IPL) fixture on Australian soil. This move could mark a historic expansion of the world’s most popular T20 tournament. The development comes shortly after CA secured a groundbreaking agreement to stage the Big Bash League (BBL) opener in India, signaling a new era of cricket diplomacy between the two nations.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, CA has extended an “open invitation” to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), proposing that an IPL match be played in Australia. While discussions remain private, the Australian board is optimistic that the idea will gain traction, especially as it looks to make the Chennai-based BBL season opener a recurring fixture.
The announcement was formally unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who confirmed that the Melbourne Renegades will face defending champions Perth Scorchers at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on December 12, 2026. This clash will be the first time a foreign franchise T20 league game is staged in India, underscoring the growing collaboration between the two cricketing powerhouses.
The initiative is part of the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap, launched at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The roadmap aims to strengthen ties in sports science, training, technology, and youth engagement. It also includes the India-Australia Youth Sports Festival, designed to foster greater interaction among young athletes. The BBL opener will headline the week-long “G’Day Namaste” festival in India, showcasing Australian culture, business, and sport.
At the launch event, attended by dignitaries including Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan and former captains Steve Waugh and Lisa Sthalekar, Prime Minister Modi emphasized sport’s ability to unite people. He congratulated Australia on its Women’s World Cup triumph. He highlighted the shared sporting journey ahead, with India set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and Australia preparing for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.
The BBL, widely regarded as the second-most prominent T20 league after the IPL, traditionally runs between December and February. Its expansion into India not only elevates its global profile but also opens the door for reciprocal opportunities. Should the IPL accept CA’s invitation, Australian fans could witness the spectacle of the world’s biggest cricket league live, marking a milestone in international cricket relations.
