China has confirmed that President Xi Jinping will travel to India this weekend to attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, ending weeks of speculation over his participation. Scheduled for September 12–13, the visit marks Xi’s first trip to India in seven years. It is widely seen as a pivotal moment in the evolving relationship between the two Asian powers.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated: “At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Xi Jinping will attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.” The announcement followed a period of uncertainty, as officials earlier in the day had declined to confirm Xi’s attendance.

Xi’s last visit to India was in 2019 for an informal meeting with Modi in Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu. His earlier engagements included a state visit in 2014 and participation in the 2016 BRICS Summit in Goa. This year’s trip carries added weight, given the lingering mistrust after the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes, which resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and an undisclosed number of Chinese troops.

Signs of Thaw

Despite the tensions, relations have gradually improved. Modi’s visit to China last year helped reopen dialogue channels, and India has since eased restrictions on Chinese investments in sectors such as electronics, capital goods, and solar energy. Both leaders also met briefly earlier this month at a regional forum in Kyrgyzstan, where they emphasized that India and China should be viewed as “partners, not competitors.”

Economic Engagement

Trade remains a cornerstone of the relationship. Bilateral commerce reached a record $155 billion last year, more than double the figure reported a decade earlier. In the first seven months of 2026 alone, trade volumes rose by 23 percent compared to the same period in 2025.

However, sources suggest that Beijing is exercising caution over new investments in India, particularly in advanced manufacturing and high-tech sectors. This reflects China’s strategic concerns even as India seeks to balance national security with economic cooperation.

Strategic Importance

Xi’s participation in the BRICS Summit offers both nations an opportunity to recalibrate ties while engaging with other emerging economies. For India, hosting Xi after years of strained relations signals a willingness to move forward, though unresolved border disputes remain a shadow over the partnership.
