Filmmaker celebrates India’s cinematic passion as Tom Holland and Matt Damon join him for the launch.

Christopher Nolan, one of cinema’s most celebrated directors, unveiled his latest epic, The Odyssey, in Mumbai on July 10, marking his first-ever film premiere in the city. Joined by actors Tom Holland and Matt Damon, Nolan expressed his excitement at finally sharing a film with Indian audiences, whom he praised as some of the most passionate and knowledgeable in the world.

The Mumbai premiere was part of Universal Pictures International’s global launch tour, which also includes London, Paris, and New York. Nolan told the audience that while he had visited India before, this was the first time he had the opportunity to debut a film here. He described the moment as special, noting that Indian viewers were among the earliest in the world to experience The Odyssey.

Tom Holland echoed Nolan’s sentiments, highlighting the unmatched energy of Indian moviegoers. He thanked fans for their warmth and enthusiasm, saying no audience brings life to a cinema hall quite like those in India. Holland also teased his excitement for the film’s future, hinting at the possibility of a sequel.

Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus in the film, called the Mumbai screening the first true audience premiere after an earlier private showing for family and friends. He emphasized the scale of the project, noting that it was filmed entirely in IMAX and involved thousands of people working tirelessly to bring Nolan’s vision to life.

The Odyssey is scheduled to release in Indian theatres on July 17, carrying an ‘A’ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification with a runtime of nearly three hours. Adapted from Homer’s Greek classic, the film follows Odysseus on his perilous journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Alongside Damon and Holland, the ensemble cast features Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, and Samantha Morton.

Produced under Nolan and Emma Thomas’s Syncopy banner, the film represents not only a grand cinematic achievement but also a milestone in Nolan’s relationship with India. Having previously filmed parts of The Dark Knight Rises in Jodhpur and Tenet in Mumbai, Nolan’s return for the premiere of The Odyssey underscores his admiration for Indian audiences and their enduring love for cinema.

With the Mumbai launch, Nolan fulfilled a long-held wish to celebrate a film with Indian fans, cementing the city’s place on the global stage of blockbuster premieres.
