The police officer told news agency PTI that Dr. Javed Akhtar was found dead in a chair oozing with blood from the head. An inquiry has revealed the possible involvement of two minor boys, aged 16, who came to the three-bed Nima Hospital around 1 am for dressing. The officer revealed that one accused had a bandaged toe and had been to the hospital the day before. After dressing, the two boys went inside Akhtar’s cabin. A few moments later, night nursing staff Gajala Parveen and Mohammad Kamil heard a gunshot. Parveen ran toward the cabin and found the doctor in a pool of blood.
Prima facie, the incident seems to be a case of targeted killing, unprovoked as it was and involved recce, said the officer. Police are now analyzing footage from CCTV cameras installed inside the facility’s reception, dressing room, and gallery. Staff member Abid told news agency ANI that a Unani practitioner, Javed Akhtar, had been on duty since 8 pm.
