The police said the incident took place in Rajasthan’s Nagaur on Thursday. The elderly couple who died by suicide are identified as Hazariram Bishnoi, 70, and Chawali Devi, 68. The couple was found dead in the water tank inside their home in Karni colony, according to a report on India Today. The neighbors, who grew suspicious after not seeing the couple for two days, alerted their son. Later, the son contacted the local police, who arrived to find the tank’s lid open. They found the couple’s bodies floating in the water.

The elderly couple had pasted a suicide note on the walls of the house. They stated that their sons and daughters-in-law were harassing them over a property dispute. As reported by News18, the couple’s suicide note revealed that their children physically assaulted them and threatened to kill them in their sleep if they went to the police and starved them. The couple’s children, daughters-in-law, and relatives had taken over all of their property and even a car. After taking everything from their parents, the children reportedly denied them food and verbally abused them.
Manish Dev, Station house officer at the Kotwali police station, said that the couple’s bodies were taken out of the tank and sent for a post-mortem examination. He told news agency PTI, “While the autopsy of the man’s body has been completed, that of his wife’s body will be done on Friday morning.”
