Gastroenterologists warn against overconsumption amid rising wellness trends.
Ghee has long been celebrated in Indian kitchens for its rich flavour and cultural significance. Traditionally used in small amounts to enhance meals, it is now being consumed in unconventional ways- spoonfuls straight from the jar or stirred into black coffee- under the belief that it boosts digestion, relieves constipation, aids weight loss, and energizes the body. However, medical experts caution that this growing trend of excessive ghee intake may do more harm than good.
Dr. Abhishek Agrawal, Director and Surgical Gastroenterologist at Asperia Hospital, Greater Noida, emphasizes that moderation is key. According to him, one to two teaspoons of ghee daily can be safely incorporated into a balanced diet, depending on individual calorie needs. Beyond this, the benefits plateau, while risks increase. Ghee is calorie‑dense and high in fat so that overconsumption can cause digestive discomfort, bloating, nausea, and unnecessary weight gain.
The idea that ghee alone can cure constipation or accelerate weight loss is misleading. Constipation relief depends more on dietary fibre and hydration, while sustainable weight management requires balanced nutrition and physical activity. Similarly, adding ghee to black coffee has no scientific backing as a weight‑loss strategy and may even trigger digestive upset in those sensitive to high fat intake.
The risks are particularly serious for individuals with gallstones or gallbladder disorders. A sudden surge of dietary fat can cause painful gallbladder contractions, aggravate symptoms, and in severe cases, lead to complications such as gallbladder inflammation or pancreatitis. For these patients, medical guidance on fat consumption is essential.
Importantly, ghee itself is not the villain, excess is. Used sparingly, ghee can remain part of a healthy diet, offering flavour and some nutritional value. But treating it as a “superfood remedy” and consuming it in large amounts is misguided.
Dr. Agrawal’s advice is straightforward: enjoy ghee in moderation, pair it with a diet rich in protein and fibre, and avoid falling for wellness fads that promote overconsumption. For those with gallstones or digestive issues, caution is especially critical. In the end, balance, not excess is what sustains health.
