In the first match held at Pallekele, Sri Lanka, on July 27, Suryakumar Yadav (SKY), the new captain for Team India in T20Is, led the team to victory against Sri Lanka. India beat Sri Lanka by 43 runs in the first match of the T20 internationals, giving a good start and momentum to the SKY-Gambhir regime.

The win exemplified his captaincy and leadership when he made calculative decisions, like giving an inexperienced Riyan Parag (3/5 in 1.2 overs) the 17th over, resulting in Kamindu Mendis’s removal. Arshdeep then proved his talent with 2/24 in 3 overs. In Surya’s first match as a permanent skipper of India’s T20 team, he made a bold statement with his performance, leading India to win.

Besides SKY’s spectacular performance of hitting eight fours and two sixes en route to his 20th half-century, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal contributed to India’s massive score of 213/7 (20). Gill scored 34/15 balls and Jaiswal 41 off 20 balls in a 74-run opening stand in the powerplay. Rishabh Pant made 49 off 33 balls but ended with just one short of a half-century.
