How multilingual localisation is set to transform Korean storytelling in India’s streaming landscape.

Over the past decade, Korean dramas have grown from a niche fascination into a mainstream entertainment category in India. What began with passionate fans embracing subtitles and unfamiliar cultural nuances has now matured into a nationwide phenomenon. The pandemic accelerated this shift, as audiences sought fresh narratives beyond Bollywood and Hollywood, making K-dramas one of the fastest-growing international genres on streaming platforms.

The next chapter of this boom lies in regional-language localisation. While Hindi dubbing has already widened access, platforms are now turning to Tamil and Telugu to reach audiences across India’s diverse linguistic landscape. Prime Video’s recent partnership with Korean entertainment powerhouse CJ ENM exemplifies this strategy. Over the next two years, the platform will introduce more than 100 Korean titles- including anticipated releases like Yumi’s Cells Season 3 and My Bias, My Boss– all available in Korean with subtitles, alongside Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu dubs.

This move is not just about translation; it’s about discoverability. Southern India has long embraced dubbed global content, from Hollywood blockbusters to anime. Making K-dramas accessible in Tamil and Telugu taps into this appetite, enabling stories to travel beyond metropolitan fan bases into Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Prime Video’s data even highlights Telugu as a surprisingly strong market for Korean content, underscoring the potential of regional expansion.

Importantly, localisation does not aim to replace subtitles. Long-time fans often prefer the authenticity of original performances, but dubbing helps first-time viewersespecially familiesovercome language barriers. As one fan noted, while she continues to watch Korean dramas, her parents now enjoy them thanks to dubbing. This dual approach ensures that both purists and newcomers can engage with the content in ways that suit them.

Beyond streaming, the Prime Video–CJ ENM collaboration signals broader ambitions. Discussions around fan events, promotional activities, and even co-productions are underway, though the immediate focus remains on strengthening the audience for original Korean content in India.

Ultimately, India’s K-drama journey reflects a shift from grassroots fandom to strategic mainstreaming. What began with word-of-mouth and subtitle-driven communities is now being scaled by streaming giants. If regional-language localisation succeeds, Korean dramas may no longer be a niche passion but a nationwide cultural wave, reshaping how millions of Indians connect with global storytelling.
