Kangana portrays former Indian PM Indira Gandhi in Emergency.
Kangana Ranaut plays the role of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She recently compared her directorial venture, Emergency, to a Shakespearean tragedy. The film is based on India’s Emergency period of 1975-1977. Kangana, who has also directed the film, spoke about her interest in depicting the Emergency period and the life of Indira Gandhi during an interview with Variety.
Kangana says that an Emergency is about deeply exploring the power and its consequences.
The actor-politician said that Emergency isn’t just about a chronological retelling of events but a deep exploration of power and its implications. She first shared a quote from a biography by cultural activist Pupul Jayakar, which read, “Jiddu Krishnamurti, her guru, friend, and guide, he asked her to call an end to it. And she said very something: ‘I feel as if I’m riding this ferocious, cruel beast, which I started to love riding initially, but now I don’t think I can get off of it.’” Kangana also pointed out, “Her life was such a Shakespearean tragedy. It’s not for us to judge or evaluate. It is what it is. When people see the film they will realize that it is such an honest take on the Emergency, what led to it and what eventually came of it.”
Emergency will be released on September 6, and the trailer will be out on August 14. It stars Kangana Ranaut (Indira Gandhi), Milind Soman (Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw), Anupam Kher (Jayaprakash Narayan), Shreyas Talpade (Atal Bihari Vajpayee), and Vishwak Nair (Sanjay Gandhi).
