With a surge in petrol prices denting people’s pocket, Kanpur car owner alleges fuel pump scam.
A car owner in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has accused a local fuel station of overbilling him by dispensing more petrol than his vehicle could physically hold. The incident has prompted district authorities to initiate an inquiry into possible malpractice at the pump.
Charan Singh, who had recently purchased a Volkswagen Virtus, drove into the station with his fuel gauge showing nearly empty. He asked attendants to fill the tank completely. According to Singh, the staff first dispensed around 41 litres before pausing. When questioned, they explained that large refills had to be done in two stages. They then resumed filling and later handed him a receipt showing a total of 52 litres.
Singh immediately challenged the bill, pointing out that the Virtus has a maximum tank capacity of 45 litres. To verify his claim, he contacted a representative from the car manufacturer, who confirmed on site that the tank could not exceed 45 litres under any circumstances.
Despite this technical confirmation, the pump management reportedly offered vague explanations. Singh has since filed a formal complaint, alleging that the station may be part of a wider fraud network possibly involving collusion with local weights and measures officials.
The district administration has taken the matter seriously, ordering an inspection of the dispensing units to determine whether they were tampered with. Officials have assured that strict action will follow if irregularities are proven.
This case underscores growing concerns about consumer rights and transparency in fuel distribution. For Singh, the episode was not just about an inflated bill but about exposing what he believes to be a systemic scam. The outcome of the investigation will determine whether this was an isolated incident or part of a larger pattern of malpractice in the region.
