Read about the recent torrential rains in Kerala that caused flooding and see how Instagram users are reacting to the situation. Stay informed and join the conversation.

A video viral on instagram shows roads flooded with torrential rains near Lulu Mall in Kerala’s Edapally. The video posted by the user “Bangalore_Malyalees” on May 28, has garnered over 1.5 M views so far.

The roads adjacent to the mall and parking area are seen plunged in rainwater. While the water level looks to be under the knee level, the traffic is visibly slow.

What Netizens Are Saying

Some users started criticising the drainage system. One posted a sarcastic comment referring to the Kerala chief minister’s ambitions: “Pinarayi’s New York road.” Another said, “This is Cochin Corporation’s road washing machine.”

“It is like Chennai, there is no setup to let the water go if it rains,” said another.

“Town planning gone wrong on a state level. It’s not that this is limited to one town. A good rain and pretty much any town in our state would be like this barring very few. It’s scary how pathetically our administrators have screwed up. Absolute lack of vision. And the problem is only going to get worse from now on,” posted another.

When the video was shared on Reddit, one user pointed out, “Amazingly enough, this cleared up within a couple of hours. By afternoon there was no water on the road.”

“I agree .. that is impressive,” replied another user.

Rain Hits Kerala

On May 28, Kerala got hit with some crazy rain and wind! In Kochi, the streets were flooded from the early morning, making it super tough for people to go outside. Traffic was moving at a snail’s pace on the main roads because of all the water.

Pre-Monsoon rains Hit Kerala

The heavy rain also caused some serious flooding in areas like Kakkanad-Infopark and Aluva-Edappally, messing up everyone’s daily routines. And in Thiruvananthapuram district, both the city and rural areas have been getting pounded with rain since the night before.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall and gusty winds of speeds up to 40 kmph in Ernakulam and Kozhikode districts on Tuesday. Moreover, the IMD’s weather report predicts moderate rainfall in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Malappuram districts.

People experience torrential rains in Kerala

Indian Metrological Department director general Mrutyunjay Mahapatra said, that the conditions are very much favourable for the heavy downpour over the next five days over Kerala, adding that India is likely to receive above-normal monsoon rain this year as mentioned in April, too.

Rains Likely To Be Heavier, Good For Country

The country is going to get more rain than usual, which is great for our farms and water supply. This is especially important because some areas have been very hot lately, with temperatures reaching over 49°C! Last year, we didn’t get enough rain because of El Nino, which made things really dry and messed up our crops. But now, with this extra rain, we should see better crops, lower food prices, and maybe even lower interest rates from the bank.

Arrival of Monsoon In North India

As far as the arrival of the monsoon in northwest India is concerned, the IMD chief said, “The arrival of the monsoon up to central India is seen to be on time and weaker progress and delayed rainfall is expected thereafter. We will be in a better position to predict it accurately by mid-June.”

“An above normal monsoon forecast by IMD this year will bode well for Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha,” Pushan Sharma, director-Research, Crisil Market Intelligence and Analytics

Prediction Of Heatwaves For Northern India

Heatwave hits northern India

The IMD has also predicted a greater number of heatwave days in northwest India and adjoining parts of the central region in June. Northwest regions may experience hotter days and more humid nights. In the remaining days of the month, the heatwave is anticipated to prevail and abate from Thursday.
