Maidaan: A Sports Biopic Releases on OTT | Watch Now

‘Maidan’ the sports biopic is now streaming on Amazon Prime. The biopic stars Ajay Devgn, Priyamani and Gajraj Rao in lead roles is available for streaming from June 5. Originally, the movie was released in theaters on April 10, ‘Maidaan’ made its OTT debut after nearly two months.  The film is produced by Zee Studios, Boney Kapoor, Arunava Joy Sengupta, and Akash Chawla, and directed by national-award-winning filmmaker Amit Sharma.  

Prime Video shared the news of OTT release of the film on their X handle (formerly Twitter) captioning it as “Groundbreaking story of India’s finest hour in football.”

Failed to Attract Audience In Theatres, OTT Another Chance

Due to is poor advertising it struggled to attract audiences into the theaters. But now with the OTT release, viewers have another chance to watch it. The movie received good reviews, receiving a 70% score from critics and 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 8.2 rating on IMDb. It bombed in the box office, though, having only grossed ₹53 crores in its time in theatres despite having a budget of ₹235 crore. Currently, the movie is available only in Hindi and English subtitles, with no info yet on other versions of the movie.

The Storyline

Maidan is the tale of An Indian Football Coach Syed Abdul Rahim. It is said that under his coaching, the Indian football team flourished. The year 1952 to 1962 is called the golden era of Indian football team. This period was specifically important for thye Indian football team as they had to establish themselves and gain global recognition. The major challenges faced by the coach were political struggles and health issues due to excessive smoking.  Despite all these challenges Coach Syed was successful in bringing home a trophy for India In 1962 in Asian Games,  a feat that has not been replicated at the international level ever since.

Celebrating the OTT release, Ajay Devgn said, “Portraying the legendary football coach Syed Abdul Rahim has been a deeply rewarding experience for me. The movie was directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, who has worked on other notable films like the 2018 movie “Badhaai Ho”. The role of Syed Ahmed Rahim was played by actor Ajay Devgn, which was promoted it on his social media. In the caption he quoted one of his lines in the movie, “Hum na sabse bade mulk hai, na sabse badi fauji takat, ya sabse Ameer. Aadhi duniya hume jaanti bhi nahi hai, football humari pehchaan bana sakti hai kyunki saari duniya football khelti hai.”

In a statement, Prime Video quoted, “Maidaan has been appreciated for its powerful storytelling and its depiction of the golden era of Indian football, striking a chord with audiences. The film’s compelling storyline, anchored by exceptional performances from Ajay Devgn and the talented ensemble, alongside its meticulous attention to historical moments have all contributed to its critical success. Maidaan exemplifies our ongoing commitment to delivering compelling and inspiring Indian stories, and we are very excited to share this critically acclaimed film with a global audience.”

In Maidaan, Priyamani plays Rahim’s wife with Ajay Devgn. Gajraj Rao and Rudranil Ghosh also have noteworthy roles. Oscar winner A R Rahman created the music for the film, which was produced by Boney Kapoor in collaboration with Zed Studios. With the release of the blockbuster song Mirzaa, Richa Sharma made a noteworthy comeback to playback singing. Due to competition from other movies, Maidaan did not fare well at the box office despite its cinematic virtues.
