Manu Agarwal shares how two tech giants shaped his career in distinct ways.

Choosing between Google and Microsoft is a dream dilemma for many software engineers. Both companies stand tall as global technology leaders, yet their work cultures offer very different experiences. Manu Agarwal, a Bengaluru-based senior software engineer who has worked at both firms, recently shared his candid perspective on how each shaped his career.

In a LinkedIn post, Agarwal explained that his time at Google felt like living under the brand’s constant gaze. “Every meeting, every PR, every Slack message carried the thought: Would a Googler do this?” he wrote. The culture, he said, polished him, instilling discipline, attention to detail, and a sense of brand identity. However, it also came with the pressure of always measuring up to an invisible standard.

Microsoft, on the other hand, offered a contrasting environment. Agarwal described it as a place where he was “being built.” With more ownership, freedom, and responsibility, he felt empowered to create and grow. The challenges were greater, but so were the opportunities for depth and long-term development. Summing up the difference, he noted: “Google gave me polish. Microsoft gave me depth.”

Importantly, Agarwal emphasized that neither company is inherently better. Instead, he framed them as “different tools for different stages of your career.” His advice to young professionals was clear: choose a culture that aligns with your aspirations, not just a brand that looks impressive on a résumé.

Beyond workplace comparisons, Agarwal’s journey is also a story of resilience. He recalled how his family struggled to afford his Bachelor of Computer Applications fees, with his father selling his mother’s jewelry to cover ₹15,000 per semester. Years later, he was earning ₹1.9 crore annually at Microsoft’s Seattle office, a testament to perseverance and growth.

Agarwal’s career path began with an internship at Microsoft Hyderabad in 2016, followed by a stint at GE Healthcare. He joined Microsoft full-time in 2017, later moved to Redmond, and spent over two years at Google in Bengaluru before returning to Microsoft in 2025 as a senior engineer.

His reflections highlight a broader truth: the workplace you choose doesn’t just pay your bills, it shapes how you think, grow, and evolve. For Agarwal, Google refined him, while Microsoft strengthened him. For others, the choice may depend on where they want their career journey to lead.
