Actor’s remark reignites debate over his career-defining films
Ram Charan’s recent statement that Peddi is one of the top two films of his career has sparked a storm of reactions across social media. While the film has already crossed ₹300 crore worldwide and continues to draw audiences, his comment has been perceived by many as dismissive of his iconic collaborations with directors SS Rajamouli and Sukumar.
During a thank-you meet in Hyderabad, Charan expressed his surprise at the audience’s enthusiastic response to certain scenes, noting that the film would hold a prime spot in his personal library. However, this declaration quickly drew criticism online. Fans argued that placing Peddi above or alongside classics like Magadheera, Rangasthalam, and RRR was disrespectful to the filmmakers who helped shape his career. One user remarked that calling Peddi superior was “an insult to SSR and Sukumar,” while another labelled it “the biggest disrespect” to his earlier masterpieces.
Directed by Buchi Babu Sana, Peddi rolls back to 1980 in rural Andhra Pradesh which showcases a labourer who then turns into an athlete who channels personal tragedy into a fight for justice. Despite its commercial success, the film has faced criticism for its portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor’s character, with accusations of hyper sexualization and reliance on regressive tropes.
For Ramcharan, to rate this film as his personal best might reflect the personal satisfaction of this project rather than critical consensus. Actors often value projects for the challenges they present or the emotional connection they foster. Yet, fans see his legacy as inseparable from Rajamouli’s visionary storytelling and Sukumar’s nuanced direction. By elevating Peddi, Charan has inadvertently reopened the debate about how stars should acknowledge the films that defined their careers.
While Peddi may hold special meaning for Charan, audiences remain protective of the works they believe cemented his place in cinema history. The debate underscores how deeply fans invest in the narratives that shape their favourite actors’ journeys.
