In a tragic incident in Singapore, Assamese singer ZubeenGarg, popularly known for his song “Ya Ali” from the film Gangster, died on September 19. The singer on Tuesday was cremated with full state honours in Assam’s Kamarkuchi NC village, drawing thousands of mourners.

ZubeenGarg was cremated with full state honours on Tuesday in Assam’s Kamarkuchi NC village, on the outskirts of Guwahati. The wife of the Assamese singer, GarimaSaikia, was seen mourning during his last rites at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. Garima broke down during the rituals and was unable to hold back grief as family members, fans and dignitaries gathered to pay their final respects.

The singer’s body was brought to the cremation site after a second post-mortem at Gauhati Medical College Hospital. He was placed on a podium next to the platform, where the funeral pyre had been constructed under a white canopy, adorned with flowers. Priests chanted Vedic hymns throughout the morning, and Assam police personnel carried his casket, giving him a ceremonial gun salute before the last rites. Several senior leaders attended the funeral, including Assam Chief Minister HimantaBiswaSarma, Union Ministers SarbanandaSonowal, KirenRijiju, and PabitraMargherita, as well as Assembly Speaker BiswajitDaimary.
Thousands of fans gathered at the cremation site, with many climbing nearby hills to catch a glimpse of the proceedings. Slogans of “Long Live Zubeen” and “Jai Zubeen Da” echoed across the area, as admirers sang “MayabiniRatirBuku,” a song Garg had often wished to be sung at his funeral.
