Gavaskar asserts that Rohit Sharma and ViratKohli’s recent performances signal their readiness for the 2027 World Cup.
Former international player and India legend Sunil Gavaskar recently underscored the importance of Rohit Sharma and ViratKohli and their readiness for the 2027 World Cup. He believes that the two cricketing stars have already signalled their intent for the next ODI World Cup.
Sunil Gavaskar urges the BCCI to include Rohit and Kohli in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Speaking to India Today, after India’s 9-wicket win in Sydney in the 3rd ODI, Sunil Gavaskar pointed to both the duo’s decision and their class under pressure. He remarked, “The moment they made themselves available for this trip, it was clear they want to be there for the 2027 World Cup.”
“You can write their names into the World Cup.”
And irrespective of what happens between now and then, whether they score runs or not, with the ability and experience they possess, if they are available, they will be certainties in the squad,” said Gavaskar. He doubled down on the point, “With this kind of rhythm, you can write their names straight into the World Cup squad for South Africa 2027.”
Sunil Gavaskar framed the selection not as nostalgia but as a calculation of bankable quality. His statement also reframes the Sydney knock as more than a consolation win. For Rohit, the century reaffirmed his authority at the top of the order in the format. And, for Kohli, the innings reset a wobbly week and underlined his ODI pedigree.
