The Lady Killer, a romantic-thriller film starring Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar, directed by Ajay Bahl, had an abrupt digital release yesterday on YouTube. It had a silent release in theatres last year, but according to reports, the film, made on a budget of Rs. 45 crore, earned only Rs. 1 lakh in its box office collection. However, it has now been released on YouTube for free.

Silent release on YouTube.

Just like its theatrical release last year, there have been no pre-release promotions either on the ground or on social media. The Lady Killer was released on YouTube yesterday. The film’s unceremonious launch on YouTube was a result of not finding any takers for an OTT release.

Disastrous performance at the theatres.

Though it was released in theatres last year, it had a minimal number of screens and shows and in very few metros. It was made on a budget of Rs. 45 crore and earned only a lakh in its lifetime run at the box office, as per a report on Bollywood Hungama. A TOI report suggested that producer Bhushan Kumar didn’t shoot an outdoor schedule of the film since it kept raining continuously in Uttarakhand.

Ajay Bahl admits the film is incomplete.

Director Ajay Bahl, in a YouTube comment section after the silent release of the film, admitted, “To confirm, yes, the movie is incomplete. 30 pages of the 117 page screenplay were never shot. A huge number of connecting scenes, Arjun and Bhumi’s entire romance, Bhumi’s dependence on alcohol, Ajrun’s sense of being trapped and losing everything and having to run from town, his sense of total despair, all these psychological beats are missing. So yes, it’s no surprise that the film feels choppy and disjointed, and one finds it hard to connect with the characters.”

He added, “NOW, about the rumors floating out here, as director, it was extremely painful to shoot The Ladykiller, but absolutely not because of the actors. Arjun and Bhumi were sheer joy to work with. They gave their heart and soul to the film. The problem lied elsewhere but that is another story.”
