At a railway station in Bihar, women vendors were captured colouring pale cucumbers green before selling them to passengers; the RPF detained nine women.

A video has recently gone viral on the internet, showing women vendors painting cucumbers green at a railway station in Bihar. The now-viral video prompted the Railway Protection Force (RPF) to detain nine women in the case and examine food safety concerns at the station.

The video, which has now gone viral on the internet, showcases cucumber vendors colouring pale cucumbers bright green before selling them to passengers at Katihar Junction railway station. This prompted a swift action from the RPF. According to officials, a total of 9 women vendors, including the woman seen in the viral clip, have now been detained for questioning following the video’s circulation. The viral clips were captured on platforms 7 and 8 of the station and showed two women sitting together, handling peeled or pale cucumbers, applying a bright green colouring substance to them, and then selling them to travellers.

RPF detained nine women involved in the case.

Visuals from the station later showed RPF personnel seizing baskets filled with cucumbers from multiple vendors while several women vendors were seen being taken into custody for questioning. Following the video’s massive circulation, the Railway Protection Force at Katihar Railway Station launched an immediate crackdown on vendors allegedly involved in the practice. RPF also confirmed that the viral video was genuine, while stating that authorities had begun investigating the matter soon after the footage surfaced online. According to the inspector, nine women vendors suspected of selling allegedly chemically coloured cucumbers to passengers were detained and questioned.

Several netizens reacted to the viral video, expressing alarm over the possibility of chemical colouring being used on fruits and vegetables meant for public consumption. Many others called for stricter food inspections and regular monitoring of vendors operating at railway stations.
