Woman brutally killed in Jiribam district of Manipur

In a tragic incident, a woman from Jiribam district in Manipur was brutally killed. She was allegedly shot and burnt to death. The police confirmed there was a gunfight and houses were burnt; however, they were yet to find the woman’s body as it was taken by Jiribam’s civil society organizations. Forensic experts and security forces are at the Zairon village, where the incident happened.

On Thursday night, as per the district’s civil society organizations, a tribal woman was allegedly shot and then burnt to death by militants during an attack at a Hmar tribal village in Manipur’s Jiribam district. The police have confirmed about a gunfight and houses being burnt. They are yet to find out about the woman’s body as it was taken by Jiribam’s civil society organizations.

The tribal woman killed was a mother of three.

Confirming the death of a tribal woman, who was a mother of three were the Indigenous Tribal Advocacy Committee (ITAC) of Pherzawl and Jiribam district. The deceased woman is identified as Zosangkim (38). The ITAC accused Meitei radical group Arambai Tenggol of first launching an attack at the village around 9pm and then burning the houses. According to ITAC’s members, Zosangkim was a homemaker and her husband works at a rubber plantation. A senior government officer from Jiribam said, “There was a gunfight, and the village was attacked last night. Around ten houses were burnt. The villagers informed us about the death of a Hmar community woman. They have taken the body. Our forensic teams are on the spot. There is no violence at the moment.” One ITAC official said that the Zairon village, where the incident took place is about 7 km from the main town of Jiribam and houses around 500 Hmar residents.

Since the last few weeks, varied parts of Manipur have been reporting incidents of gunfights and attacks.
