India is proposing Delhi as the host for the Gukesh-Ding chess match. Yashobhoomi in Dwarka is being considered as the ideal venue for this exciting event.

India wants to organise the World Chess Championship in Delhi this year.  The current champ, Ding Liren, will face off against 18-year-old Indian player, D Gukesh.  Let’s see who will come out on top in this epic battle of brains.

India is planning to host a big event at the India International Convention and Expo Centre, called ‘Yashobhoomi’ in Dwarka. It’s right on the border of Delhi and Gurgaon. They want to use this place for a match they’re trying to win.

All India Chess Federation To Host A Chess Match

The All India Chess Federation has been given the green light to host a big chess match! Even though everyone thought Gukesh’s hometown of Chennai would be the perfect spot, the government wanted a more central location.

If you want to host this match, you better hurry up and submit your bid to Fide by May 31. Fide will then decide who gets to host the match in June.

Yashobhoomi, a huge meetings and events center, was opened in September 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It’s massive – covering over 1.07 lakh sq.m. in its first phase! That’s even bigger than the venue for the G20 Summit in 2023.

About Yashobhoomi

Originally, Yashobhoomi was supposed to host the G20 Summit, but construction delays changed those plans. The whole center cost ₹25,700 crore to build, with the first phase alone costing ₹5400 crore. It has 15 convention rooms, including a huge auditorium and ballroom, and can hold up to 11,000 people.

Fide really wants this match to be held in a top-notch venue, not just any old hotel room. They’re looking for a place with a lot of status and a big financial investment. Emil Sutovsky, Fide’s director general, said they won’t settle for anything less when it comes to picking a host.

So, after the big Candidates tournament in April, Fide (which is like the boss of chess) asked for people to offer money to host the next big chess event. They said they needed at least $8.5 million, with $2.5 million going to the players as prizes and $1.1 million going to Fide. The rest of the money, about $4.9 million, would be used for things like making sure nobody cheats, improving how the games are shown on TV, and upgrading technology.

The Chess Tournament

The tournament is supposed to happen between November 20 and December 15 this year. It’s going to be a series of 14 games, and the first player to win 7.5 games will be the champion.

Back in 2000, India hosted part of the World Championship and Viswanathan Anand became the champ. Since then, India has only hosted one more World Championship in 2013. They spent a lot of money on it, but it was a big deal for the country.

Singapore is also interested in hosting a big chess match because they love chess there. They think they would be a great place for it because they have a mix of Chinese and Indian cultures. But hosting these events can be really expensive, so they have to think carefully about it.

Earlier this year, Singapore hosted a big concert for Taylor Swift, which made them a lot of money from tourists. Some people were upset about it, but Singapore was happy with the extra cash.
