India captain Rohit Sharma faced severe scrutiny and criticism in the last couple of months, especially after the concluding Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. Yuvraj Singh comes out in support of Rohit Sharma.
Yuvraj Singh reiterated that Rohit Sharma cannot be judged as a captain based only on India’s recent run of defeats against New Zealand and Australia. The 43-year-old has defended his ex-teammate Rohit in the recent past as well. Rohit and Gautam Gambhir have been under fire due to India’s 3-1 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
What did Yuvraj Singh say on the matter?
Yuvraj Singh told the press at an event, “I always look at the team graph over a five-year period or three years. Gautam has just come into the system; he needs more time. Rohit Sharma won the T20 World Cup as captain; he was captain when India played in the ODI World Cup final. He led MI (Mumbai Indians) to five IPL titles.” He added, “The guy has stepped down from the last match and given somebody else a chance. How many captains have done that in the past? Please tell me.”
Citing the 3-0 defeat to New Zealand at home as more shocking than the loss to Australia, he said, “That is a tougher pill to swallow. Nitish scored a hundred on his first tour; it is amazing. Not sure how many have done that. Jaiswal scored 150 plus in his first Test in Australia; it is highly commendable. We should talk about these performances more.”
