The High Court on Wednesday quashed the anticipatory bail granted to Giribala Singh in connection with her daughter-in-law, Twisha Sharma’s death.

On Thursday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested retired judge Giribala Singh, the mother-in-law of Twisha Sharma, who allegedly died by suicide on May 12. The arrest came just a day after the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled the anticipatory bail granted to Singh earlier. The court observed that the allegations in the case were serious and noted concerns regarding cooperation with the investigation.

High Court pulls up earlier bail order.

Twisha Sharma was found dead on May 12, following which an FIR was registered on May 15. On the same day, a Bhopal trial court had granted interim anticipatory bail to Giribala Singh. However, the decision soon came under scrutiny as the investigation progressed. While hearing the matter, Justice Devanarayan Mishra of the Madhya Pradesh High Court set aside the bail order, stating that the lower court had failed to properly examine the available evidence before granting relief. The court also referred to repeated allegations made in the case, the gravity of the offence, and the need for an unhindered investigation. The anticipatory bail granted under various sections of the BharatiyaNyayaSanhita (BNS), along with provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, was officially quashed. Meanwhile, Samarth Singh, Twisha’s husband and Giribala Singh’s son, remains in CBI custody as the probe continues.

Twisha’s family calls it the “First Step Towards Justice.”

Following the High Court’s decision, Twisha Sharma’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, expressed gratitude to the judiciary and to those who have supported the family during the ongoing legal battle. Speaking to the media, Sharma said the order had restored some faith in the process and called it an important moment in their pursuit of justice for his daughter. “I express my gratitude to everyone who has stood by us so far in this fight for justice. I pray that this is only the first step in this battle,” he said. He also thanked the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of India for taking cognisance of the matter, saying the support from institutions and society had given the family strength during an emotionally difficult time.

The case has sparked conversations across legal and social circles, especially because of the involvement of a former judge. Navnidhi Sharma said he continues to place his trust in the CBI investigation and hopes that the complete truth behind his daughter’s death will eventually come to light.
