Ten rescued as India urges calm amid rising tensions

An Indian crew member remains missing after an Iranian attack on the Cyprus-flagged cargo vessel GFS Galaxy in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage off Oman’s coast. The ship caught fire following the strike, forcing its crew to abandon the vessel. Of the 11 Indian nationals on board, 10 have been rescued, while one is still unaccounted for, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed.

In a strongly worded statement, New Delhi condemned the assault and emphasized that civilian shipping must not be targeted. “The continuing incidents of attacks on commercial shipping in the region are deeply worrisome. We reiterate our call for immediate de-escalation of tensions and a diplomatic solution so that peace and stability can return,” the ministry said.

The Indian Embassy in Muscat is coordinating with Omani authorities as search-and-rescue operations continue. Officials stressed that free navigation through international waterways must be restored in line with international law.

Iran defended its actions, claiming the vessel had taken an “unauthorized” route. Following the strike, Tehran temporarily closed the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital oil transit points. The closure immediately heightened global concerns, as the United States responded with a third round of military strikes targeting Iranian positions.

The US Central Command confirmed that the Galaxy had sustained severe damage and could not continue its journey. It accused Iran of failing to honor previous commitments to avoid targeting civilian vessels. “We are imposing a heavy cost by degrading Iran’s ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial ships freely transiting the strait,” CENTCOM said.

This latest confrontation underscores the fragility of regional diplomacy. Just a day earlier, Iranian and Omani foreign ministers had met to discuss maritime security in the strait. However, repeated attacks and retaliatory strikes have cast doubt on the viability of interim agreements aimed at reducing hostilities.

For India, the incident is a stark reminder of the risks faced by its nationals working in global shipping lanes. With one sailor still missing, the government’s immediate priority remains ensuring the safety of its citizens while pressing for restraint from all sides.

As tensions escalate, the Strait of Hormuz once again stands at the center of a geopolitical storm, where the fate of one missing Indian sailor symbolizes the broader human cost of conflict at sea.
