Shreyas Iyer finally tasted success as India’s T20I captain, guiding his team to a convincing seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the opening clash of the three-match series in Harare. After enduring a frustrating run of seven games without a win, Iyer’s maiden triumph was marked by a standout performance from 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose explosive batting rewrote record books.

India’s bowlers laid the foundation by restricting Zimbabwe to 125 for 7. Making a strong comeback after a long injury layoff, pacer Mayank Yadav struck with the very first ball, dismissing Brian Bennett and consistently clocking speeds above 145 kmph. His disciplined spell, supported by Ravi Bishnoi’s economical bowling and debutant Ashok Sharma’s recovery after a shaky start, ensured Zimbabwe never found momentum. Reduced to 26 for 3 inside the powerplay, the hosts struggled despite brief resistance from Wessly Madhevere, Ryan Burl, and Tadiwanashe Marumani.

The chase, however, belonged to Sooryavanshi. Walking in with confidence, the teenager unleashed a fearless assault on Zimbabwe’s attack, racing to his half-century in just 18 balls. His innings, decorated with four boundaries and four towering sixes, made him the youngest player ever to score a fifty in international cricket. Having already scored a monumental 175 in the Under-19 World Cup final at the same venue earlier this year, Sooryavanshi’s familiarity with Harare conditions was evident as he dismantled the opposition with ease.

Iyer was effusive in his praise for the youngster, calling him “fearless” and highlighting his self-belief. “It was exceptional batting from him. He has played here before and carries immense confidence every time he steps onto the field,” the skipper remarked.

While Sooryavanshi’s fireworks stole the spotlight, Ishan Kishan added a brisk 35, and Iyer himself anchored the chase with an unbeaten 28. India wrapped up the target in just 13.2 overs, sealing a dominant win and giving their captain a long-awaited reason to celebrate.
