Flag handover ceremony marks beginning of Ahmedabad’s journey as host city.

The Commonwealth Games flag has officially reached Gujarat, symbolizing the start of India’s preparations to host the 2030 edition in Ahmedabad. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel received the flag in Gandhinagar on Wednesday, a moment that marked the state’s formal entry into the global sporting spotlight.

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who returned from Glasgow after attending the closing ceremony of the 2026 Games, handed over the flag during a cabinet meeting. Sanghavi was part of the Indian delegation at the ceremony, which included Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra and Indian Olympic Association president P. T. Usha. The flag transfer from Glasgow to Gandhinagar represents India’s official acceptance of hosting responsibilities for the next Commonwealth Games.

The event was attended by Gujarat’s para-athletes Rakesh Bhatt and Rohit Majgul, both of whom competed in Glasgow, along with para table tennis player Sonal Patel. Their presence highlighted the state’s commitment to inclusivity and recognition of athletes who have brought pride to the nation.

Chief Minister Patel expressed his admiration for India’s athletes, who secured an impressive 39 medals at the 2026 Games. In a statement shared on X, he congratulated the contingent, praising their determination and resilience. Patel emphasized that their achievements would serve as inspiration as Gujarat gears up to deliver a memorable sporting spectacle in 2030.

Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in Ahmedabad, Deputy CM Sanghavi assured that the upcoming Games would be organized with grandeur and efficiency. He stressed that every effort would be made to provide world-class facilities and an environment where athletes could perform at their peak.

Ahmedabad was officially confirmed as the host city in November 2025, making this India’s second time hosting the Commonwealth Games after Delhi in 2010. The announcement was seen as a major milestone for Indian sports, positioning Gujarat as a hub for international events.

The flag handover ceremony in Gandhinagar was more than a symbolic gesture, it was a declaration of intent. With preparations now underway, Gujarat aims to showcase its organizational capabilities, cultural richness, and hospitality to the world.
