The UEFA Champions League will open its first week of fixtures with a solemn gesture of remembrance for the victims of Nepal’s recent floods and landslides. Ahead of all 18 scheduled matches, players, officials, and fans will pause for a moment of silence. At the same time, a banner carrying the message “You are not alone, Nepal” will be displayed prominently in stadiums across Europe.

Honouring Lives Lost

The tribute comes in response to the catastrophic floods triggered by an ice and rock avalanche near the Nepal–Tibet border on August 26. The disaster unleashed torrents through the Bhotekoshi River, devastating towns, villages, and critical infrastructure. According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the tragedy has claimed 1,355 lives to date, with nearly 4,996 individuals still missing, including hundreds of foreign nationals. Rescue teams have managed to save more than 13,000 people, though search operations continue in the hardest‑hit regions.

UEFA’s Global Solidarity

UEFA emphasized that football is not only a sport but also a platform for unity and compassion. The governing body has previously extended similar gestures beyond Europe, notably in September 2023, when tributes were held for victims of the Morocco earthquake and the Libya floods. This latest initiative reinforces UEFA’s commitment to standing with communities worldwide during times of crisis.

Champions League Kick-off

The new season begins on Tuesday with six matches, including a marquee clash between Real Madrid and Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu. Six more fixtures follow on Wednesday, with the remaining six scheduled for Thursday. Each game will carry the symbolic act of remembrance, ensuring that the victims of Nepal’s disaster are honoured on one of football’s biggest stages.
