In a candid interview, Gillespie alleged that the board still owes him thousands of dollars in unpaid compensation and accused Aaqib Javed, then chief selector, of undermining his authority and creating a hostile environment.

Gillespie’s tenure coincided with one of PCB’s most unstable phases, marked by frequent changes in staff and selection policies. Initially tasked with rebuilding Pakistan cricket, Gillespie said his role was drastically reduced after Javed’s appointment. “I went from managing the Test side and having a say in selection to having no role at all,” he revealed, adding that the experience left him mentally drained and questioning his future in coaching.

According to Gillespie, Javed’s approach was domineering from the outset. He described their first meeting as confrontational, with Javed asserting control and dismissing collaboration. Gillespie claimed that Javed continued to “snipe behind the scenes,” eroding trust and leaving him feeling disrespected. He warned that if such negative remarks persist, he may consider legal action.

The former coach emphasized that he refused to compromise his principles for job security. “I wasn’t going to be a yes-man,” he said. “I could have stayed quiet and collected my salary, but that’s not who I am,” Gillespie admitted. He expected to be dismissed eventually, given the lack of support and constant interference.

Beyond professional disagreements, Gillespie highlighted the personal toll of his time in Pakistan cricket. He described feeling deflated and doubting his abilities, a stark contrast to his reputation as one of the sport’s most respected figures. Today, Aaqib Javed is Director of High Performance at the PCB, while Gillespie has distanced himself from coaching roles, citing the damaging impact of his Pakistan experience.
